Public Service
1991-2003 City councillor on Dublin City Council for twelve years from 1991 2003.
2002 elected as a TD for the Dún Laoghaire constituency , and was re-elected in 2007.
2010 Minister of State with special responsibility for Sustainable Transport, Horticulture, Planning and Heritage. This work is spread over three departments: Transport; Environment, Heritage, and Local Government; and Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The Minister of States principal responsibility in the Department relates to the implementation of Smarter Travel and to that end he will oversee the work of the National Sustainable Travel Office. He will also oversee that part of the work of Maritime Transport - Freight and Logistic Policy Division which relates to the Freight Forum and the development of sustainable freight policies
