Main Functions of the Mercantile Marine Office

The statutory Duties of a Superintendent of a Mercantile Marine Office are to ensure that the requirements of the Merchant Shipping Acts, International Conventions and Regulations in respect of Irish Registered vessels are complied with.

In the main, the functions of the MMO have their statutory origins in two pieces of legislation, the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894 and the Mercantile Marine Act, 1955.  There are numerous functions and duties imposed on both the Superintendent and the Mercantile Marine Office in these Acts.

The main statutory functions carried out by the MMO are :-

1. To Maintain a General Register of Shipping

1.1 To Process Applications for Ministerial Approval sought under the Mercantile Marine Act, 1955

1.2 To Process Reports on Births and Deaths onboard Irish Registered Vessels

1.3 To Collect Receipts for Ships Surveys for the Marine Survey Office

1.4 Sale of Publications including Ships Articles, Crew Agreements and Log Books

1.5 To Process Applications for Signal Letters

1.6 To Process Applications to Reserve a Name Proposed for an Irish Vessel

1.7 To Assist Vessel owners in Complying with Registration Procedures

 

2. To Maintain a General Register of Seafarers

2.1 To Process Applications for Seafarer's Discharge Books and Irish Seafarer's ID Cards

2.2 To Process Applications for Seafarer's Sea Time Records

2.3 To Process Applications from Irish Shipping Companies for PRSI Refund Claims

2.4 To Process Applications for Emergency Service Awards

2.5 To Collect Receipts for Exam Fees for the Marine Survey Office

2.6 To Stock and Supply Medical Examination Forms and Regulations to Practitioners.

2.7 To Process Applications for AB and EDH Certificates
