When the 2012 Sports Capital Programme closed for applications on Friday June 1st, over 2,150 sports clubs and organisations had applied for funding. These organisations are seeking more than €224m in funding for projects with a total value of almost €370 million.
Commenting on the level of demand for sports capital funding the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Mr. Michael Ring TD stated:
“While we were delighted to have secured funding of €30m for new sports capital projects, funding which shows the Government’s commitment to sport, demand has outstripped supply with €7.50 sought for every €1 we can allocate.
“This shows a great enthusiasm for the Sports Capital Programme, but it also means that we will only be able to allocate a fraction of the funding sought and the task of assessing applications will be very difficult.
“We would love to support every deserving project, but the harsh reality of life is that there are limits to what we can do. That is why expectations have to be realistic. There is an insatiable demand for funding and there will still be a large number of disappointed applicants.”
Departmental officials are processing all applications received. This process will take some time, due to the volume of applications and the detailed information contained in each one. As a result the list of successful applicants will not be announced before the late autumn or early winter 2012. The Department will use the media and our website www.dttas.ie to announce grant allocations and will also write to individual applicants confirming the outcome of their application.
All applications will be assessed against a number of strict criteria including:
• Likely beneficial effect on participation;
• level of disadvantage in the club’s area;
• the level of own funding being provided by the club;
• whether the facilities will be shared with other clubs or sports;
• previous sports capital allocations awarded to that particular club.

Note for Editors:
The Sports Capital Programme is the main channel of Government support for developing sports facilities and purchasing sports equipment for sports clubs and organisations across Ireland. This Programme aims to foster an integrated and planned approach to developing sports and physical recreation facilities throughout the country. In particular, its objectives are:
- to assist voluntary and community organisations, national governing bodies (NGBs) of sport, VECs and local authorities to develop high quality, safe, well-designed and sustainable facilities in appropriate locations and to provide appropriate equipment to help maximise participation in sport and physical recreation;
- to prioritise the needs of disadvantaged areas in the provision of sports facilities; and
- to encourage the multi-purpose use of local, regional and national sports facilities by clubs, community organisations and national governing bodies of sport.
