Answered by the Minister for Transport
(Noel Dempsey T.D.)
Under Section 8 of the Roads Act 1993 the National Roads Authority (NRA) may apply to the Minster for Transport to re-designate a road to be a motorway subject to certain conditions being met. This includes a requirement for a public consultation process.
That process is being undertaken in connection with an application by the National Roads Authority for redesignation of elements of the N6, N7, N8 and N9 as motorways. The time limit for forwarding written submissions to the Minister expired on Friday 28th March 2008.
A number of written submissions have been received and these submissions are currently under consideration in my Department.  Once that process has been concluded, I will make a decision on whether to grant the application from the NRA.
