Marine Notice No. 29 of 2008 - Deployment of Data Buoys in Galway Bay

NOTICE TO ALL SHIPOWNERS, FISHING VESSEL OWNERS, AGENTS, SHIPMASTERS, SKIPPERS, FISHERMEN, YACHTSMEN and SEAFARERS

The Department of Transport wishes to advise that two new data buoys will be deployed by the Marine Institute in the Galway Bay area.  One buoy is located at Mace Head and the other at Mid-Bay which is east of the Aran Islands. The exact locations of the buoys are:

Mace Head    53° 19.8566 N       9° 55.9500 W
Mid Bay         53° 08.0937 N       9° 30.6574 W

These will be on station from Monday 14th July 2008. All vessels are requested to give the buoys a wide berth.  A schematic diagram of the buoys to be deployed is attached (Figure 2).

These buoys are part of the SmartBay programme (www.smartbay.ie).  They will be transmitting meteorological, water quality and oceanographic information.  The data of these buoys will be soon available on the Marine Institute website.
