2008 Edition of Sectoral Plan for Accessible Transport under the Disability Act 2005

In line with a commitment in the 2006 Edition of Transport Access for All, a Review of the Department of Transport’s Sectoral Plan under the Disability Act 2005 was undertaken in 2008. The Review was informed by an extensive consultation process and the Public Transport Accessibility Committee was involved in the Review from the very beginning. Arising from that Review, the Department has now published a Revised Sectoral Plan for Accessible Transport.

The 2008 Edition sets out the continuing proposals of the Minister for Transport and the agencies under his aegis in relation to the rolling out over a number of years of a comprehensive programme of accessible transport for people with mobility, sensory and cognitive impairments, together with older people. It covers accessibility matters relating to bus, rail, light rail, rural transport services, taxi and hackney services, air and marine travel as well as parking facilities for motorists with disabilities.

The 2008 Edition does not contain any substantial policy changes or any substantial changes to end target dates. It does, however, set out more explicitly both the original targets to be achieved and the timescales for meeting them so as to facilitate the monitoring of progress going forward. The Revised Plan also provides for greater joint working between the Department of Transport and the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government in order to progress accessibility improvements to the environs in which public transport operates.
