The Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen T.D. today (Thursday, 16th December 2004) announced that he has not accepted the CIE request for an 8% increase in fares for the Group's three companies.

Following detailed examination of the application from Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann, the Minister decided that an increase of 3.5% in fares revenue for the CIE companies in 2005 was more appropriate as it was more in line with inflation.

In reaching the decision, the Minister said he was conscious of the requirement to achieve a balance of the impact on the customers of CIE with the need to sustain the financial health of the three companies.

It is understood that Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann will now detail the new fares structure.
