The Motor Insurance Unit has responsibility for the legislative framework governing motor insurance and for monitoring the cost and availablilty of motor insurance in Ireland

First EU Motor Insurance Directive (72/166/EEC) on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to insurance against civil liability in respect of the use of motor vehicles, and to the enforcement of the obligation to insure against such liability.

First Motor Insurance Directive (72/166/EEC) published by the European Commission on 24th April 1972.  The Directive aims to ensure the free movement of persons and motor vehicles and to reduce disparities relating to motor insurance in this regard.  The Directive also provides for compulsory motor insurance throughout the European Union.
