The Motor Insurance Unit has responsibility for the legislative framework governing motor insurance and for monitoring the cost and availablilty of motor insurance in Ireland

Fourth Motor Insurance Directive (2000/26/EC) on the approximation of the laws of the Member States relating to insurance against civil liability in respect of the use of motor vehicles and amending Council Directives 73/239/EEC and 88/357/EEC.

Fourth Motor Insurance Directive (2000/26/EC) published by the Commission on 16th May 2000.  The Directive provides for the settling of claims arising from accidents occurring in other Member States by vicitms on return to their home country.  It provides for a direct right of action against the insurance undertaking of the liable party.  Each insurance undertaking must appoint a claims representative in each other Member State.  The purpose is to allow victims of accidents settle claims in their own language and through procedures familiar to them.
