The Minister of State for Transport, Pat the Cope Gallagher met with the family of the Maggie B's skipper Glen Cott on Tuesday,16th May 2006. The Maggie B sank on 29th March off Hook Head.
The Minister assured the Cott family that a full investigation of the incident is being carried out by the Marine Casualty Investigation Board. This is an independent statutory body whose remit is to investigate and establish the facts relating to marine casualties and to make recommendations.
The Cott family have asked for the vessel to be raised in order to establish why it sank. While this is a matter for the Marine Casualty Investigation Board, Minister Gallagher assured the family that their views would be conveyed to the Board for their consideration.
In the interim, Minister Gallagher requested that the Naval Services carry out a thorough examination of the Maggie B. The Minister for Defence, Willie O'Dea, T.D., has informed Minister Gallagher that this will be done. The Naval Services are due to begin work on a full professional dive tomorrow morning, Monday, 22nd May.
