Marine Notice No 11 of 2000 - Special Area Status under Annex 1 of MARPOL 73/78

To All Shipowners, Agents, Shipmasters, Navigating Officers, Fishermen, Yachtsmen And Seafarers  

The Department of the Marine and Natural Resources wishes to advise all concerned that northwest European waters including the North Sea, Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, the English Channel and the Continental Shelf west of Ireland and Scotland have been designated a Special Area under Annex 1 of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL 73/78) with effect from 1 August 1999. 

Special Area Status means a total prohibition on the discharge of cargo related oil and stricter controls on the discharge of processed bilge water from machinery spaces.
