Notice To All Shipowners, Ship Agents, Shipmasters, Ships' Officers, Skippers, Fishermen And Seafarers

The Department of the Marine and Natural Resources has been advised by Fugro-GEOS Limited that six current meter and oceanographic moorings  will be deployed in the Atlantic Ocean off the West Coast of Ireland commencing on 27 April, 1999 at the following locations:

MOORING ID       LATITUDE       LONGITUDE    WATER DEPTH
Line 1          56o 06N          13o 54W        2,000 metres
Line 2a          55o 18N          10o 00W           500 metres
Line 2b          55o 24N          10o 18W        2,000 metres
Line 3          53o 54N          14o 00W        1,250 metres

The inital deployment will be performed from a survey vessel called the R/V Jean Charcot commencing on 27 April, 1999 and it is intended that the moorings will remain in position for a period of approximately 12 months, to early May, 2000.   There will be periodic inspection visits undertaken by Fugro-Geos at approximately 3-4 month intervals to verify location and security of equipment.  An overview diagram showing locations with respect to the west coast of Ireland is attached.

The positions of these moorings are subject to confirmation at deployment, and may change though time.  Any change in the position of these moorings will be advised as the systems are deployed and checked at intervals.

All the above moorings are multi-instrument moorings, with the uppermost instruments 300 metres below the sea surface.  There are no surface marker buoys.  Mooring configurations are attached for reference.

All vessels, particularly those engaged in fishing, are requested to give the moorings  a wide berth and keep a vigilant lookout in the areas the moorings are deployed in.

A further Marine Notice will be issued when the moorings have been removed.

Should there be any queries regarding these mooring deployments, please contact Dr. Genevra Harker at the following location:
