To All Shipowners, Deck Officers And Ratings In Merchant Ships  And  Fishing  Vessels  And  To  Nautical  Colleges

With retrospective effect from the 1 September, 1997 the period of validity of  Sight Test Certificates issued by the Department of Marine and Natural Resources to new entrants and to deck officers and deck ratings in Merchant Ships and Fishing Vessels is being increased from 6 months to 24 months.

The standards of vision required will remain unchanged and are set out in the Merchant Shipping (Medical Examinations) Regulations, Statutory Instrument No. 193 of 1984, as amended, and in the Department's Marine Notices.

As a result of this change, the Department's publications "Directions as to the Examinations of Deck Officers under the Merchant Shipping Acts" (paragraph 30.2) and "Examinations for Certificates of Competency for Fishing Vessels" (paragraph 3.13(2) and Appendix B)  should  be amended accordingly.

and Natural Resources
