A new Coast Guard team was founded in Wesport in 2003 after a review of potential incidents and search and rescue coverage along the County Mayo coastline. The Unit went operationally active as a coastal response team on the 3rd August 2004 following extensive training.

The Unit was visited by Coast Guard Director, Captain Liam Kirwan in may 2005. The photograph below shows the team during the visit.
