The Objectives of the Irish Coast Guard

Objective 1: To discharge the States responsibility for marine Search and Rescue and marine medical evacuation within the Irish Search and Rescue Region (200 nautical miles off our coast), Inland Rivers, Lakes and Waterways, the littoral area and cliffs of Ireland and the off-shore islands to reduce loss of life.

Objective 2: To discharge the States responsibility for marine pollution and salvage response within the Irish Pollution Response Zone including Harbours and Maritime Local Authority areas, offshore units and oil handling facilities to protect the quality of the marine environment and preserve property.

Objective 3: To promote a culture of marine safety and pollution avoidance and prevention to ensure reduction of marine emergencies.

Objective 4: To provide a national communication service for marine emergency management, marine industry and marine recreational public.
