Under the 1997 Public Service Management Act, Departments are required to prepare Strategy Statements within six months of the appointment of a new Minister. This Department is now required to prepare a revised Strategy Statement for the three-year period 2008-2010.
A Strategy Statement is a forward-looking document that serves as a framework for action by the Department. Strategy Statements generally set down a number of High Level Goals and Objectives for the Department, identify Strategies to be pursued, and set down Output and Performance Indicators to help measure progress.
As the Department begins the process of developing a new Strategy Statement to shape its strategic direction and work-programme over the next three years, it invites the public to submit written views, preferably in electronic format.
Existing Strategy Statements
There has been some change in the shape of this Department since our last Strategy Statement was developed in early 2005. The Maritime Safety Directorate, the Irish Coast Guard and Maritime Transport Division transferred from the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources to the Department of Transport in January 2006. Responsibility for Non-national Roads to transfer from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government to the Department of Transport was announced in June 2007. Anyone interested in making a submission under this consultation may be interested in the existing Statements of Strategy 2005-2007 of the relevant Departments:-
